Theme: The LORD’s King is just and loyal; marvel in his beauty

“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.” – Revelation 22:16 (cf. Luke 24:25-27)

1 & 2 Samuel chronicle the transition of Israel from a loose confederation of tribes ruled by judges to a centralised monarchy. Kingship is the big theme of the book, specifically the kind of king that God’s people need to flourish. The book begins with the request of Hannah and the birth of Samuel, she was hoping that he could be a new judge to deliver Israel from the Philistines. Whilst Samuel serves in this role, he is also a prophet and he ordains the first king, Saul. Saul is a king who is outwardly impressive, a king like that of the nations and the Israelites were hoping that he will lead them against the Philistines. Initially, he has some success in battle, but his refusal to obey the LORD results in his downfall and eventual defeat. Another king is then chosen by the LORD, David. He is eager to please God and he rises to prominence when he defeats Goliath. Thereafter, Saul becomes jealous. Unwilling to pass the kingdom to David, he clings to power and tries his best to kill him. This forces David to flee and live as a fugitive. During this time, he protects God’s people as he engages the Philistines and the Amalekites in battle. He also remains loyal to Saul, refusing to harm him despite several opportunities. When Saul finally dies in battle at the end of 1 Samuel, the stage is set for David to officially become king.
