Belgic Confession Article 32

Church Government Principles from Acts
– The local church must have an input in the election of office bearers (cf. Acts 1:21-26; 6:3-6; 14:23)
– Office bearers are called to serve by Jesus Christ (Acts 20:28-30; Ephesians 4:11-14) in a particular church (Acts 14:23)
– A self-governing church requires a plurality of elders (Acts 11:30; 14:23; 20:28)
– Matters of doctrine or practice which concern all of God’s people should be addressed in a meeting that includes office bearers from different churches (Acts 15:6)
– There is no hierarchical authority when it comes to office: apostles, elders (and prophets, cf. 15:27, 32) all meet together for discussion (Acts 15:6-7)
– A church meeting ends when it is concluded, there is no ‘standing meeting’ or individual who represents/speaks on behalf of the church (Acts 15, implied)
– Special revelation (the Word of God) has ultimate authority in the church and must guide the decisions which are made (Acts 15:28)
– A decision of a church meeting is binding and not advisory (Acts 15:25, 23)
