Nabal the Calebite Fool
It is very unlikely that Nabal’s parents would’ve given him a name that means fool. Most likely, his name has another meaning depending on pronunciation. The fact that he is a “Calebite” may indicate a descendance from Caleb, one of the faithful spies (Numbers 13–14) whose inheritance was in the area of Hebron (Joshua 14:13–14; 15:13). It could also be a slur, implying that he is rough, stubborn and thoughtless like a dog (the Hebrew word for dog, keleb is very similar to Caleb).
