The 'heart' in Samuel is seen as the seat of emotions (1 Samuel 1:8; 4:13; 17:32; 25:36; 28:5), will (1 Samuel 6:6; 7:3), motives (17:28), reason (21:12) and conscience (25:31; 2 Samuel 24:10). David was a man after God’s own heart not because he was perfect, but because he was sensitive to the Holy Spirit and willing to repent when he had sinned (2 Sam. 24:10–25; Ps. 51).
